Adventures of the Crazy Owl Lady

I've been collecting owls for awhile now. My mom says that my apartment looks like "a crazy owl lady lives there". Most of them I have bought from garage sales and thrift shops and I usually give them a little makeover with paint. Anyway, my mom and I went to our favorite thrift store for a little treasure hunt this afternoon and someone had donated a who...le collection of owl figurines to the store. There must have been at least 40 figurines of various sizes. I picked out some little brass owls and a woman shopping next to me picked out the other brass owls I had been eyeballing. The nerve! I kicked myself for not grabbing them fast enough. This triggered some sort of crazed lady inside me. I kindly asked her if she was set on buying said owls and of course she said yes. I seriously wanted to grab them out of her cart and run to the cash register. Insane, right? I'm not proud of myself. So, the moral of the story is that I should never be allowed out of the house on Black Friday, if there are owl items on sale.

My camera has a pretty good image stabilization system. I remember how frustrated I used to get with  my first digital camera because the tiniest movement would result in an out-of-focus image. Then again, sometimes the "mistake" photos surprise you. That is the case in this photo. My movement actually created an interesting, unintended effect. It is always exciting for me to transfer my pictures from my camera to the computer because you never really know what exactly you're going to get on a bigger screen.

Rubber Ducky I'm Awfully Fond of You

I love rubber duckies.  They just put a smile on my face.  I have quite a collection of duckies of various colors and styles, but I still love the classic yellow duck the most.  The pink ones are a close second.  Just to clarify, I'm not a ducky hoarder.  Really. No need for an ducky-vention.  Back away from the duckies and no one gets hurt!

I lose lose myself in a colorful world

Jukka, one of my father's brothers died this spring.  Matti, my mom's brother died a week ago.  Miriam, my stepdad's mom, died Thursday night.  I almost lost my husband this year.  Those events are just the tip of the iceberg of sorrow that this year has brought me and my family.  Without a doubt, it has been the most difficult and challenging year of my life.  I'm praying that this cycle of sadness is ready to pass and that a cylce of something better can begin.

One of the things that helped me survive this year is my photography.  It is a a true escape.  I can just leave my sorrows behind, even for just a little while and live in a world of bright colors. I lose track of time in my little world and nothing else seems to matter.  I truly believe that it is a gift that I was given to help me through the tough times.  That might sound silly to some, but it has turned out to be one way I can keep going on.

A Shining Star Has Fallen

Today is December 6th, the day Finland celebrates its Independence Day.  Each year on this day there is a celebration at the palace of the Finnish president.  This year's celebration was missing one of Finland's brightest literary stars.  Matti Yrjana Joensuu, my uncle (my mother's brother) was supposed to attend, wearing his new suit and medals of honor.  Unfortunately, Matti passed away in his home at the age of 63 on Sunday, December 4th 2011.  Losing Matti has left an enormous emptiness in the hearts of his sisters and others who loved him.  My love, prayers and thoughts go out to everyone who is missing him tonight.  Maybe in a different world or maybe if he had had more time, I would have had the chance to get to know him better.  For now, I'll just hold on the the faint childhood memories I have left of him.  Matti's death is a reminder to us all to hold on dearly to the ones we love.

I was recently approached by Emily Hildebrand through Flickr and asked if I was interested in being featured as a photographer on Photography Blogger, a "creative photo journal for photographers".  Photography Blogger publishes articles on photography tips and tricks, provides some inspiration and eye candy and showcases photographers.  I'm honored to have been selected.  They have some amazing photographs featured on their site and it is humbling to be part of it all.  Anyway, here is the link to the feature on my photos

Owl Friday: Owl Family Portrait

I feel like a real professional photographer after the photo shoot I had with this lovely owl family.  They came to my studio and posed nicely and stood very still, almost like statues.  Too bad they paid me in pellets.

Love owls like I do? See more fun owl pictures by other Flickr users in the Owl Friday Group.

candy stripes

I love candy, and not just because it is sugary and sweet and tastes good. I also love candy because it is pretty. Bright colors. Fun designs. Here is a one of my most recent peppermint candy photos.

Chic Snowflakes

I was browsing at the Christmas section at Target last week and I stumbled across these black snowflake ornaments.  At first they made me squint, tilt my head (like a dog) and wonder what black ornaments would look like on a traditional Christmas tree.  The idea seemed a bit gloomy, but I was intrigued and inspired to figure out a way to use them (and they were only $1.00 per set).  They actually look pretty chic on a pink background, don't they?

It's all about me!

The pressure is on.  This is my first post and probably the place where I should say something profound or interesting or at least something attention-grabbing.  But I guess I'll just settle for a little introduction.  So, here goes....

If it wasn't for the invention of the digital camera, I probably would not have photography as a hobby or a possible future dream job.  I was born with congenital cataracts and had numerous eye surgeries as a young child. As a result, I still have very poor vision and the traditional film camera doesn't allow me to see well enough to take the type of pictures I'm interested in taking . The viewfinder screen on a digital camera may not seem like a vital feature to most people, but it allows me to see well enough to capture the world around me.

I suppose you could call my style of photography colorful, bold,  quirky and sometimes whimsical.  I mainly focus on still life photography. Other than that, my photography comes down to three simple things: A girl. A camera. A colorful world.

I'm currently in the process of launching Sofia Smith Photographic Art, my own small (more like tiny) business. This is scary new adventure, a dream, a lot of hard work and some fun all wrapped together.I will soon open an Etsy shop to make my photographs available to any admirers out there who are interested in my work.  Anyone will be able to add a bit of color to their life in the form of affordable photographic art.
